Harmful algae bloom,.....avoid contact with the water, therefore swimming area is closed. Boat ramp / cartop kayak launch open to anglers.
I asked them why they closed the access areas at the mouth of Spruce Run Creek & Black Brook Cove. Their answer: "Because people, illegally, swim there." I told them that illegal swimming at those 2 areas was a Parks & Forest's enforcement issue. That those 2 areas should still be open to anglers, as WMA lakes that have suffered the same harmful algae in the past, have remained open to fishing. I imagine, less headache for them, if they just close those 2 areas off to all. |

Any update on this situation? I have Monday off and was planning to take the boat out on spruce run but wondering if I should call an audible and head somewhere else. Do these algae blooms tend to impact fishing? I already get skunked enough as it is a SR so if the fishing is going to be even tougher than normal I think I will just head to the south branch for smallies.

Boat ramps are open, my girlfriend launched her work boat there earlier in the week. Just swimming is prohibited.

Might be a good idea to call an audible, maybe bring the boat to another nearby lake or reservoir? Or like you said, theres always the smallies in the south branch. Good luck wherever you go! |
