i heard that teams of 2-3 sunfish will grab your bait at the same time and just swim as fast as they can in the same direction to try to spool you, that's probably what happened

Bahhhhhhhhhhh.. Don't get me started on sunfish.. This year I must have "sunfish/bluegill" only jigs.. I can muster a crappie or perch to save my life..
