Default Carp-y Diem?

So, took my 6-year old over to Verona Park for a second attempt to catch his first trout. Saw nary a fish come out of the water on the "trouty" side of the lake, so walked over to the more "bassy" side and hucked a couple of wax worms out there. The little man got on the board for 2014 with this little fella. Had to look it up online but this is a carp, am I wrong?

Regardless, it was as good as an 18" rainbow as far as he was concerned...

Ahhhh! My first thought was that it was a shiner of some kind but after seeing big carp jumping out of the water all over the place, I had carp on the brain...

My little guy was just happy to get on the board. He's got big plans for us this year. Last year he wanted us to catch 100 fish. Caught our 100th July 4th weekend. This year, he's angling for 200. Pun intended...

Gonna be a good year... Would be off to a better start if we could catch one of those trout that appear to be on a hunger strike.

I remember catching a mess of huge golden shiners on a fly rod when I was about 12. I had no idea what they were, but I proudly displayed my stringer full of them to an old timer who asked me what I caught. He IDed them as golden shiners. I had no clue shiners could get so big. Muskies and Pike must love these things.
