Cool article!!
There was an article a few months back in fly fisherman mag.
that spoke of similar happenings in a river in western russia....
Apparently its a popular fly fishing destination because of the large rainbows
that feed on these rodents almost exclusively...This particular river(cant remember the name) was common place to catch 25-30" rainbows with the fly rod...

Big food = bigger fish (sometimes)

True, but sometimes elephants eat peanuts! Lol... I'd love to hook into a 30" bow--that'd be sweet.

They should set aside a batch at the Pequest and feed them just mammalian flesh... See if they grow faster LOL

I don't remember where I saw it, but a a while back there was a fly fishing Trout video that they talked about them eating Mice. They opened one up to check the stomach contents and it was filled with them and almost nothing else. Talk about opportunistic feeding. Fish will hit anything that moves if they are in the mood.

Nothing new , a friend use go to Ak in June some 20 plus yrs ago using mousee's , I never did preferred late season for big Iilimama bows ! I forgot why June but remember perhaps some type migration occurred .
Same fly good in Russia & Argentina however
I personally preferred streamers & oversize drift & strip flys ! Actually many huge Ak & Russian bows caught via simple bead fly that imitated salmon eggs .
Lethal in right areas especially Illimima drainage & Rissian rivers .
Mousee action limited to specific time & season from my knowledge of that fishery .

Unbelievable what trout will eat when they are hungry..But u don't have to go to Russia to catch large trout..Labrador much closer and at certain times of the year large brook trout will feed on lemmings which is a mole like creature simaler to a small mouse..Check it out Artic Char can be fooled into striking also up in northern Quebec..See lures like Mercer's lemming, and Might Mouse flies..No finesse flies for this babies..

I always keep 2 in the box and a headlamp in a pocket for the large browns. Best throwing them after dark.
