Penns Creek Pa. 11/ 10-11/2012:

Postponed one week due to the hurricane Moz, Wilson and myself made it out to fish Penns Creek.

Friday night I met Wilson in Millheim and had a good steak and beer at the Elk Creek Café. http://www.elkcreekcafe.net/

Moz was running a little late after stopping in at Cabellas and hitting traffic in Harrisburg.

We all settled into our cabin around 8pm or so. http://www.hemlockacrescampground.com/

Saturday morning we were greeted with rain as we made our way over for breakfast at the Barnyard, I guess its like a diner. After a big breakfast Moz and I went to Weikert to drop one car off and we made our way up to Coburn to start fishing. I ran Moz through the Penns Creek gauntlet, at least 5 miles of walking and another 2 miles at the bottom just to get to the car. We did see a big bald eagle while we were fishing and I saw a 5lb. dead rainbow trout on the bank missing only its head, go figure. Air was cool and just stayed cloudy most of the day. Wilson banged around true to form finding some low impact fishing and drowning worms.

Saturday night it was Delmonico steaks at the club I belong to. http://www.ucscpa.com/

Sunday morning back to the Barnyard for a big breakfast and we hit the no kill stretch of Penns Creek. I walked up the 2 miles and worked my way down and Moz and Wilson banged around in the lower section.
Saw a lot of fishermen out today, I’m not used to see so many guys on Penns in mid November but the weather was great. Got my PB Penns Creek brown, about 18”.

So nice to head out that way were life moves at a much slower pace and the scenery is awesome !!

Andy, I know Penns quite well in the state park area, Poe Paddy. Were you by chance through that stretch and how was it? I love the water there around past the tunnel as well. My dad raised me on trout in the area. Honey Creek? Know that one? That's also an awesome stream. I'm curious if that campground is open year round? Very nice report btw.

Well the oilpan and everything else is still on my car so other than a good scare hearing that "WHAM!" sound it seems to be all OK. Future note to anyone driving through Bald Eagle Park; If your GPS picks a dirt road and it's the only one covered with leaves indicating it's not being used dont' take it unless you have 24 inches of ground clearance.

It was a great trip and much thanks to Andy and Wilson inviting me to join them. I don't know where between parking my car and starting the gauntlet that Andy drank a six-pack of Redbull as he was off to the races as soon as he hit water. Andy was nailing them all day where I fished like my car and spent a lot of time with the bottom. I missed a whole bunch and only landed a couple including a dink smallie which at the time put me in the lead for the "Penns Creek mixed-bag" but Andy caught a rainbow later on putting me out of it.

Beautiful place and very different fishing than I've experienced in NJ (5 milles and only 3 other fisherman to be found!). The bald-eagle was a highlight. The only lowlight was driving out to breakfast in the rain on Saturday morning plastering the side of my car with wet horse-crap compliments of the Amish.

Danfaust, we parked at Coburn and hiked to Weikert. The lower no kill section I think is called Cherry Run. Like Moz said, put on your hiking boots because it's easily 7 miles. Flows were @ 2.3. I posted a link for lodging, best bet is the internet to find what you need.

Looks like you a decent time fishing. At least I know you all ate good. All places mentioned are A-one. One of these trips I'll make out to see you.
