Default Powering up on Trailer

I was wondering about whether it is a smart idea to power up the trailer when pulling your boat out of the water. I have done this for years. I dunk the trailer in the water and get the bunks wet then pull the trailer out of the water until the front fenders are just coming out of the water. This allows my boat to line up perfectly every time. I then approach with the boat and then gently apply power until the boat is against the front of the trailer. If by myself I can then go up and fasten the eyehook or have somone that is with me do it. I do not allow anyone in front of the boat until it is against the rubber stop on the front of the trailer.
I would like opinions as to whether this is hard on the boat, motor or trailer and is it a safe or stupid way to retrieve my boat?
