Default Surf Fishing for bigguns

Had my annual cousins weekend this past weekend at my grandmothers shore house and decided I wanted to try and get my cousins on some sharks. We get all the necessary equipment and got to soaking 3-4 hours before peak high which was at 10pm. My one cousin quickly had some action on a smaller rod with a few small kings while we soaked a few bait rods for big boys. At the end of the night we didn't catch any sharks, but we did catch two massive rays. One was a roughtail stingray that had its tail cut off, not sure if it was a boating accident or what but it definitely made it easier to handle. The second ray was a bluntnose stingray and it was whipping its tail all over the place! Both rays were pulled in on my grandfathers surf pole, it has a wooden handle and has to be around 40 years old at least. So much for bringing my new pricey setups All in all we had a ton of fun and I was happy I could get them on some fish. Tight lines!

Yo Man….. great report and some awesome pics!!!!! Nice to see you guys hook those big rays.

Love the fact it was old school tackle.

If ya don’t mind giving info…..how you rigging ? Leader length, lb test, what hooks, what bait, you casting from the sand or yaking baits out? Sorry for million questions but ya don’t see reports like yours here on NJF. Cool stuff.

Thanks man! Appreciate it! And for you? of course!

We had some pre-setup shark rigs from the local tackle shop. Wire leaders, Big inline circle hooks, with 4-6 oz of weight on them to hold. This was all tied to 50lb mono. Told my cousin to pick up a sputnik but I don't think he knew what that was We were casting bunker chunks as far out as we could, no yaks involved. It was a ton of fun!

Looks like like steel leader with 2/3oz diamond sinker...use that rig for surfing for blues too and nice catch..musta given you a hell of a fight up and down the beach..love those wooden handle rods..I have many of then with open face reels(Penn) that I use on party boats..
