Default rockaway river smallmouth

after reading a rockaway river report i decided to hit the rockaway river after work today. got there around 5:30pm and started with a micro fat a crankbait and got one in short time that was 10" switched to a 1/8oz augertail grub and caught two more they were smaller at 8 and 6" the river was running a little fast for my liking and was clear even after the rain we got yesterday. the bottom was covered with crayfish and even saw a small snapping turtle swimming by. i moved some rocks to see if the hellgramites were still around and did not see any might be to late for them now. i will go back when the river slows down a bit and might even try some topwater for them.

I used to really enjoy exploring the Rockaway in the areas around where I worked in Pine Brook. It is not going to produce monsters, but catching some scrappy smallies in areas that very few people ever get to made it special for me. And some smaller Esox-family members are often present as well.
Good to see that there are others that feel the same.
Catch 'em up!

Great job ice badger. I actually saw a decent sized snapping turtle right next to me while I wading on the Rockaway. I have yet to see crayfish. Can't wait to go down there again.
