D&R canal/ Raritan river South Bound Brook 1/3/26:

Always a great way to start the new year is a cleanup with Mr. D&R Canal himself Robert Barth from the D&R Canal Watch. I first remember asking Bob why he did a cleanup in January and he said it was the only month open that he didn't have activities planned.
About 8 volunteers spent roughly 2 hours cleaning the area and got quite a good haul. Great to see Somerset County dedicating more canal access with hopefully a canoe and kayak launch. Bob told me that's an old swing bridge coming out and hopefully put on display nearby.
The D&R Canal is part of the East Coast Greenway.
