I proposed the same question. If they wanted the lake trout to be harvested, then why have a closed season at all.

'put and take'. I think some states worry that lakers will decimate alewife populations in certain lakes and tend to liberalize bag limits on them.. They suck them down in staggering numbers.. lakers are also notorious for gobbling up large numbers of newly stocked Rainbows , Browns, and Landlocks. NY. Not sure if NJ's approach is any better or worse than other states , but it sure is different.. Load up big time for 9 months, and hands off for 3 months... weird. |

Yesterday, casted a Yozuri from RVR's eastern shore: 2 SMB's,....which indicates the water temp. hasn't cooled sufficiently for trout to arrive inshore in numbers.

SMB are not a good indicator of warm water.. They hit aggressively in VERY cold water at times. They prefer water temps around I dunno, 55-60 maybe, but I have caught a lot of them on lures in 35 degree ice water when nothing else would bite. They hit lighter, fight a lot more sluggishly, and don't jump at all in cold water, but they do hit.. bob

I just know, that over the years at RVR, when I catch SMB's I don't catch trout. When I catch trout I don't catch SMB's. Reliably happens fall into winter, and winter into spring.
