Dear Mr. Sanborn, Thank you for contacting me regarding the “Strengthening Fishing Communities and Increasing Flexibility in Fisheries Management Act,” also known as H.R. 200. This legislation was introduced by Rep. Don Young of Alaska on January 3, 2017 and referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources. If enacted, this legislation would change requirements for the fishery management plans for overfished fisheries and alter catch limit requirements by authorizing Regional Fishery Management Councils to consider changes in an ecosystem and the economic needs of the fishing communities when establishing the limits. As you may know, I will not have the opportunity to vote on this bill until it is approved by the relevant committee. However, I will certainly take your views into consideration should this legislation come to a vote before the U.S. House of Representatives. Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts on this issue. If you’d like to stay updated on my work in Congress, I’d encourage you to sign up for my newsletter by clicking here. You can also visit my website, Facebook page, and Twitter profile for more information. For any questions, concerns, or thoughts, please feel free to call my office at 202-225-4765. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Tom MacArthur Member of Congress

Gerry sent this to Rep Frelinghuysen. I know this will stir the pot but so be it. The fact there's less than a dozen replies to Gerry's post (which I assume means there's about that many who have reached out to their local representatives) is disheartening. If people are sincere about change and having their voice heard and our opinions matter (whether our representatives listen or not) it doesn't get any easier than this. If we don't, we've already lost. How a post like this doesn't blow up is mind-boggling.

The U.S. House of Representatives will vote on the Modern Fish Act (included in H.R. 200) on Tuesday, June 26, 2018. The U.S. Senate is currently considering the Modern Fish Act (S. 1520).
It is imperative that you contact your Member of Congress today and strongly urge them to support the Modern Fish Act. The Modern Fish Act (included in H.R. 200/S.1520) will make critically important changes to federal fishing regulations, including several key provisions contained in both bill that are supported by a broad coalition of recreational fishing and boating organizations: • Allows for recreational fisheries to be managed using more appropriate management tools • Modifies the annual catch limit requirement to allow for more adaptive approaches • Requires managers in the southeastern U.S. to perform long-overdue examinations of fishery allocation, based on modern criteria • Limits the spread of catch share programs that have negatively impacted anglers and fishing communities • Promotes consideration of new data collection methods that could improve fisheries management and conservation • Ensures exempted fishing permits help fisheries management and conservation - rather than the status quo which can hinder both Please urge your Member of Congress to support the Modern Fish Act.
