I've got the same thing on my agenda for the winter. I was leaning towards the Lowrance HDS7 gen 3. Would really like the HDS9 but don't know if I'm willing to spend the extra cash and if I really need one that big in a yak. I did check out the helix at my local kayak store and was blown away by the things it showed, thus why I'm upgrading. I'm familiar with using a Lowrance but could be swayed to the hummingbird. Guess that will be up to the salesman. |

I run a 958di and a 999si in my boat and i do alot of electronic installs. I did a helix 5 a few months back and its too small i think. They have new sizes up to 12" which are nice. Ive installed many hds units and it depends on ur usage. Humminbird has the best side imaging and i prefer their chartplotting. Lowrance has the better 2d sonar esp on general/auto setting. U can never have too much screen so get the biggest u can afford. I never use down imaging so i wouldnt spend for it but w side image u also get down as part of the package
