Catch & release definitely works! I have access to a semi private lake where my buddy & I had to get our hooks out of bass ' throats. Carefully grabbing the hook with pliers through one side of gills, and holding down the throat hole with 2 fingers through the other side of gills, leaves a non bloody bass ready to fight again. I've noticed we catch a few of the same fish from certain fins or black bar pattern on the Lmb.

Caught this muskie at 39" three winters ago

A member of this site caught him again two winters ago just shy of 40"s

and he recaught the fish again last winter at 41"

If you look directly over the anal fin you will see 4 distinct spots in a direct line to make a positive Id of this fish
