Largemouth bass behavior is fascinating.
Although the nest requires a female to lay the eggs, the eggs are actually guarded from predation by the male. The male bass will even stay with the fry after the hatch for a short while. Day-and-night he has to keep those helpless little fry from getting picked off by sunfish and the like. When the bass is removed from the nest, all the fry could be quickly devoured. Here's a short online article about bass spawning behavior: http://www.texasbassfishing.com/bass...bass-spawn.asp

It is usually the male that sits on the nest to guard the eggs/fry, but the female often mills around the area, helping to chase away any would-be predators. Also, if the male is caught, the female often moves right in to take its place on the nest.

They may not have spawned yet....did you see any fry?....She may have been hanging just off the nest and was hungry! They will do that before the deed is done as well.
