The IDEA is so that You can use a LARGE LIVE BAIT such as a BIG SUCKER/PERCH/TROUT/CHUB/JUMBO SHINERS and not have the LARGE LIVE BAITFISH tripping the flag continuously while You are waiting for a Large Fish (like a musky or pike) to take the bait and:THEN THE LARGE FISH (like a musky or pike) WILL TRIP THE FLAG! ![]() |

Clothes pins and rubber bands on the base of your tipup will work too. Make sure the clip isn't too tight though or they might rip your bait right off the hook. I wouldn't worry about all that if you want big pike though, dead bait is better.
