Default First Ice, and a nice pike to start

I found 2" inches of ice today not too far from Jersey and decided to try it for a few hours this afternoon. Around 2:20 I got my first flag of the year and it ended up being a fat 36" pike. It took a big sardine and it was ripping line so fast the tipup was shaking and the spool was spitting water out of the hole. What a rush! Jersey ice won't be too far behind. I bet there will be a few places ready for the new year.

True, ice can be very inconsistent. I know the spot well, had safety gear, and stayed within 50 yards of shore in shallow water. I wouldn't recommend going on ice that thin unless you are prepared to go for a swim.
