It has come a looooong way since then! Some for the good, some for the bad!

FINS is a company that has really advanced. They make a Windtamer Braid that eliminates wind knots. They make a new braid for fishing bottom that offers just the right amount of stretch to avoid pull outs and offer the feel of mono. ( as close as you can get). Its a great product, but I feel because they are not in your face with advertising, many fishermen are missing out!

Todays braid does not damage your rods & reels either. It has many advantages, such as using lighter sinkers, jigs, lures, etc... I will not fish without it myself. ( thats only my own personal liking ofcourse).

Look into the different styles & brands, but all of my mono guys absolutely love the FINS with the stretch to it.
