From what I understand, no trespassing signs pertain to the land, not a public waterway. So, hiking, you may have been trespassing, but in the water your on public property???

I was approached by 2 guys in a row boat with a motor about 4 years ago on the Passaic river while I was in my kayak, and they told me it was a private area in the Great Piece Meadow area. They "tried" telling me that I was not allowed to fish there. I later called the NJ F&G and they told me that there were no areas in the Passaic River in that area that was off limits to fishing.

But I give the guys credit for trying to keep a good spot all to themselves. I never met up with them again in dozens of trips in the same area, but I almost wish I did.
