That might be the best report all year - great going leaving on a hunch. Thanks for getting some tags in as well. Do you know how many tags you deployed? Please tell me you tagged a bigeye? That would be a first in New Jersey....if you did PM me.

Besides the obvious, what's the difference between bigeye and bluefin tuna? I've seen lots of bft photos and these looked very similar.

As Sportfish said, the striated liver is one way to tell, but that only helps after you have reached for the butcher knife. The pectoral fin does not reach the 2nd dorsal fin on Bluefin, it does on Big Eyes. On Bluefin the 2nd dorsal and anal fins are tipped with pale blue, on Big Eyes they are tipped in yellow. Not to be a wet blanket but I have a problem with the first photo of Sea Bear's 2nd post, can be the camera angel, but those look like Bluefin.

Capt. Rich is right on all accounts except for his last sentence. We didn't catch any bluefin on this trip. The pectoral fins on all of the BIGEYE we caught went passed the start of the dorsal fins because they were all, in fact, BIGEYE, including the fish in whatever photo he is talking about.

I guess next time I'll also have to takes photos of the striated livers we removed from all of those BIGEYE when we filleted them up.

Not "the start of the dorsal fins", the start of the second dorsal, it's pretty clear in your photo, 2nd post.

Bigeye vs. Bluefin

Bigeye - Notice the long pectoral fins (longer than both bluefin and yellowfin but shorter than true albacore), they extend passed the beginning of the dorsal fins, especially noticeable in the fish on the left

Bluefin - Short pectoral fin, does not reach the start of the dorsal fin

Great now look at the photo I'm referencing, since I can't drag your photo here.
