Avet LX Recommendation?

7 foot Seeker BA Series 20-30 pound class. Whatever you get, if you intend to troll, get slick butts which makes it easier to get the rod out of the rod holder when there is a load on it.

If you are going to be trolling bunker spoons, you want at least a 7 foot rod with a tip that is on the softer side. A tip with some give in it make the spoons run better.

My plan is to get separate trolling and bunker spoon trolling rods. I know I may have somewhat missed the stripers this spring...but I hope to be ready by the fall.

Resurrecting this post...

So over the winter, I ordered two 8.5' bunker spoon rods form Kevin Brogan and paired them with Shimano Tekota 800LC reels. (Actually have the reels...rods will be done very soon.)

Now...just ordered a 7' Medium-Heavy action rod for jigging and chunking from the boat for stripers and fluke. (Thinking I could troll with these too, but I have a couple trolling rods already.)

My question is...which Avet reel? Currently looking at the JX 6/3 G2. Any thoughts? Which would you choose if trolling? And which would you choose if not trolling with this setup?

The JX 6/3 G2 will fulfill all your striper needs. Capacity is a bit small for offshore trolling, but if you're into party boat tuna fishing, it will work for both chunking and jigging, as you can put 400 yards of 65lb braid on and still have room for a 100 yard mono topshot. You'll be good for pretty much any yellowfin or longfin, but it would be possible to get spooled by a large bigeye.

As I stated before, all things being equal, I prefer the narrower spools, I find you get a lot less torque on the rod (turning on the long access from the force of turning the handle) and line management on the spool is easier.

That being said...is the "G2" feature worth it?

Again...jigging and chunking...and possible trolling for stripers.

The standard JX is rated by Avet to provide 15 lbs of drag at strike and 20 at full. The G2 is 21/28.

Either will give you all the drag you'd ever need for stripers.

Whether it's worth it, I can't say, it all depends if you want the additional drag, that's the only real difference.

The literature does say the clicker has been redesigned to be louder, but I don't have any personal experience with that.

I'll add a few things. 1. make sure Kevin puts a gimble on the 7' rods your having made. 2. for inshore bass/blues I think the JX is overkill. The new G2 SX with 12lbs at strike and 20lb at full of drag is really all you need, loaded with 50lb braid and call it a day. Plus the smaller reel will feel more comfortable in your hands and can play double duty as a bottom fish setup, espcially if you plan to use it for seabass and fluke. YOU DO NOT WANT TO FLUKE WITH A JX. If you like a taller reel, even the MXJ G2 would suffice.

That's interesting. Do you think the SX is still up for trolling if I choose to with this rod? Say stretch's or umbrella rigs?

If you want to use them to troll offshore too I would get the LX G2 in the 4.6 ratio.

Welp! Looks like the reel answer is...multiple reels! One reel can only cover so much.

I like the idea of the SX reels (smaller and lower profile) since I've got trolling stuff that's doing just fine for now.

So looks like I've got it down to the Avet SX 6/4 which I intend to use for chunking and jigging fluke and stripers on a 7' medium heavy Kevin Brogan rod with a gimbal! (I called and I was already getting a rubber gimbal...but worth asking!)

Any last thoughts before I pull the trigger? I don't mind having my mind changed...
