Default Ling

Doing some offshore ling fishing in a few weeks. What is a good rod/ reel setup most of you use for 150 ft of water? You could add line test and hooks as well if you like. TIA

4/0 baitholders on 40 to 60 lb leader. I put my sinker loop towards the end of the rig with a tag end long enough to tie a good surgeon's loop and one of my hooks right off the sinker on the surgeon's loops.

Its ling fishing. Keep it basic. Medium heavy to heavy rod that can manage 6 to 12 oz depending on current and depth. 30 lb braid. 25 lb mono top shot about 50'.

Go heavy. You'll probably be hauling up doggies and eels too.

Lightbulb Re: Ling

I like 2/0 bait holder with a green glow bead on an 8" leader right above the surgeons loop for your sinker. I tie 2 ganion loops . 1 just above the sinker and the second far enough away from the bottom hook to not hang up on the way down. I use a loop to loop connection on the bottom 8" leader and just slide the hook on the loop of the top dropper keeping it short. I like straight 30lb mono as feel isn't as important ling fishing. If I use braid I also use a 25 to 50' 30 lb top shot with 40lb braid. The topshot will help you get out of tangles. It is easier to untangle mono to mono. Braid to braid tangles are the hardest to fix. I don't like heavier topshots because you will get hung up. It is hard enough to pull/break 30 lb and braid cuts hands. You will not be able to hop out of all the snags so you will have to break some off. When the dogs are around just use the bottom hook.

10 oz sinker then 2 2/0 snelled hooks on the bottom like a flounder rig, 10 foot or so of 30 to 40 lb top shot, 40 to 50lb braid, blackfish rod and reel. Sometimes can get away lighter depending on conditions. Not enough cod around to bother with a high hook unless you are seeing sea bass. Otherwise downlow will work well. If you see flounder, you can try the same rig with smaller hooks like 1 or 2.
