Tile Fish - Circle Hook or Octopus Hook???
Was wondering what your hook preference is tile fishing? Do you prefer a circle hook which I hear a lot a people suggest or an octopus hook and why? Also do you prefer a regular grade hook or a 4x hook? Also using 80lbs to 130lbs mono for the rig do you crimp or tie? Any feed back will be appreciated.

Re: Tile Fish - Circle Hook or Octopus Hook???
Circles. Crimps. 3 or 4x. 80 main and 130 on the hooks.
Tiles will hook themselves on a circle hook. Let em eat then elevator up! Tying rigs with 80 and 130 is a pain in the ass. Crimp and be done with it. Tilefish have teeth. Not big teeth, but enough to chafe up your line around the hook. You'll get more life outta your rigs with 130. You'll also be in good shape should you hook up with a nice snowy or wreckfish 600+ ft down. Or if a tuna grabs it on the way down...

Jigman13 greatly appreciate your thoughts. Pretty much in line with what I was thinking.

A lot of guys use crimps with circle hooks. I don't use either. If you're going to tie heavy mono, the uni knot is the best way to go.
I've been using 80 lb. Seaguar. I really don't think ya need it. What really works is super fresh bait strips, mackerel, or a lot of guys use salmon. I never had real good luck with bluefish. Meat Hunter |

X2 on salmon belly strips. Make sure they're thin though. Too much meat and it washes out and causes your rigs to spin

Salmon does work well. I have had pretty good success with bluefish as well. Like you said it has to be fresh. I have caught blue fish tile fishing and used as bait and it was great. i brought some blue fish from the store another time and they would not really touch it. Agree fresh is key.
