If you want to catch lakers, LL salmon, browns etc in NY state this time of year I would not ice fish.. You will need to tow a small boat, but the open water of Cayuga Lake will get you a lot more fish and bigger fish than ice fishing the Adirondack lakes.. Fishing has been hot up here at Cayuga , but its all open water believe it or not,,, Otsego Lake in Cooperstown is a very productive lake for ice fishing with a better variety of fish than Schroon, and its a lot closer for NJ fishermen.
Not sure of the ice conditions this year, but if you like to ice fish, its well worth checking out.. bob

As of a week and half ago there was very little ice on Otsego, mostly on the southern part and was only 3" but it has been above freezing for about a week so highly doubt any safe ice. Yes the finger lakes are great, Cayuga and keuka come to mind but if I had to pick an in lake don't think you can beat champlain with George a close second. With that said there's just something about jigging lakers through the ice and this year the Adirondack lakes are the only option

Yes, if you want to ice fish, this year its pretty much all the way north.. Otsego is a more productive lake than the Adirondack lakes, but some years it doesn't get good ice.. Its been a mild winter so far.. The Finger Lakes have better trout and LL salmon fishing than Lake George, and a lot less pressure, but they generally don't freeze enough for most ice fishermen.. Depends on the year.. Champlain is a wonderful fishery, but its huge, and the fish aren't everywhere, and a guide might be a good choice first time up... bob

Yeah mid 30's to mid 40's for weeks on end is WEIRD in NY state.. We usually have ice from early Dec until April.. not gonna happen this year.. thats fine with me as I don't ice fish, and a lot of lakes up here get hammered all winter,,, bob
