Default Big D Tomorrow

Hitting the Delaware tomorrow with a buddy from work, first time going out there. Anyone have any tips on what to use to catch something? Looking to go for bass maybe some catfish, and anything I can snag.

Hey BT,

the river could not be any better to fish than right now. The level is not too high or low and it's that deep clear green that makes spending time on this river a treasure. I live 200 feet from the river in Riegelsville PA.

Bass: fish the rock ledges and the fast water below the rapids. The small mouth were introduced in the 1800's and there are some real bruisers out there. In the slower water I like to cast against the bank and retrieve back to the boat with a stop and go pattern. I like a rig with a fat bobber and three feet of line with a 1/4 oz lead head with a small twister tail. In the fast water use a small Rapala or spinner.

There are some true monster Muski in the Delaware. Unless you have alot and I mean alot of time, concentrate on other stuff.

There are three species of catfish; bullheads, channels and flatheads. Find a back eddie like where the Musconetcong dumps in and cast out a BIG gob of worms on a fish finder rig and let it sit. It takes a catfish about 15 minutes to find baits so be patient. Guys have been getting 20 to 30 pound flatheads. They also use live trout or sun fish for bait. I like beef liver or chicken liver too.

There are also stripers in the river but I have not heard of any being caught in this hot weather.

The ramp in Riegelsville NJ is closed for reconstruction.

Good luck. Look forward to hearing how you did.

Doc

I'll be out there tonight swimming and fishing. Using live bluegills is hot right now. The Cats are inhaling the bait, average size for cats is between 5-10 lbs but that 20-30 lber is always a possibility. Cut bait, live eels, worms and livers are also great options on the river. Good luck!!!
