Might be a juvenile carp. The ones in Smithville had that color but a little bit different shape.

I'd say the stripe (very faint horizontal) makes it the defining factor of it being a wild goldfish - thought it was a carp until later posts pointed out the wild goldfish -
now i'm convinced!! ps - if you want to catch a goldfish, here's a link that may help: Petsmarts in NJ ![]() |

Looks like a tin foil barb, a fish bought for home aquariums...

Common carp are spread throughout the Union County area. I caught them as a kid in the Rahway River, Nomahegen Park, and that little pond you were fishing in as well as the one behind the shopping center on 22. There were some "not so native" goldfish in some of the ponds as well. I used to supply a friend of mine with 8-12 "comets" from a little pond in that area for his backyard pond. When we used to peddle our bikes to those exotic fishing places, catching shiners, small carp, chubs, sunnies, bluegills etc. was outstanding fun until we got older and more sophisticated and forgot what a thrill it was to just catch fish. Take a kid fishing and watch his or her smile. It will turn your idea of fishing back around and you'll remember what got you started fishing in the first place.
