I had a similar problem with an old 6hp evinrude years ago. It would start easily after squeezing the fuel bulb, but sputter out in a short time. I could keep it going with constant squeezing though, even running out on the lake. My problem turned out being leaks in the fuel line between the gas can and the engine. It would run fine as long as I kept the fuel line full by squeezing the bulb, but if I stopped, it would suck air and stall.
Maybe try another fuel line.....borrow one if possible and cross that off the list first before spending the cash for a new engine.

I second check your fuel lines. Not only the one from the tank to the engine but the ones under the cowel. Also check the impulse hose to the pump. (if it has one) No pulse from the crankcase to the pump will cause the pump to not work properly.

I have has issues where old lines were breaking down internally. They looked OK on the outside but the inside was swelling and blocking off fuel flow. It showed nearly that exact problem. The engine would run great for 20 mins and then starve for fuel and die.

For $10 in fuel hose, it's worth a shot.

I got a 2000 9.9 mercury mariner four stroke, and the damn thing runs as smooth as any motor I've ever seen. Highly recommend this motor. I've used it for trolling on the big finger lakes, small ponds, medium lakes, passaic river, deleware river, it performs great!!!
