Nothing wrong going with 8ft ugly stick if that what your budget allows. If I was on the receiving end of Xmas gift I would be grateful regardless of rod.
One thing for sure I would be much happier with a custom rod that falls withen the budget you mentioned. Advantages if you held them in your hand is that custom glass rod will be muck lighter in your hand than heavy ugly stick. Spend 8-12 hrs codfishing bait or swinging a jig all day and you will greatly appreciate the lighter custom that is built to your specs. The choice would be obvious at that point which direction would be best.

The ugly stick is a bit whimpy for a Cod Rod I think

Any old stiff rod you find at a yard sale for a buck or 2 or go for a 7 ft Ugly Stik tiger heavy action.

I have a 8 foot heavy action ugly stick. I've used it on wreckfish, Tile fish, and cod outta Montauk. deepest wreck was 780' i was pulling double headers between 15-30 lbs. each with no problem. A wimpy rod it's not :-)

Rod that can be used for cod on a party boat.
7 1/2 handle 12-16 oz price 100-200.
I know custom Is out so off the rack
Getting back to the original comment in this thread and the contents thereof, the poison rods that Kevin builds are of an excellent quality. I have several of them, been using them since 2008. I can tell from experience you will not be dis-satisfied. The rods are a great value for the price. I have had a number of conversations with Kevin discussing how the rods will react and he has been dead on. I am very happy with the overall quality and performance and value.

Tsunami 7'6" TSTBC-j762xhrod can be had between 90-100 dollars much nicer than the ugly stick. Only a few more dollars

another vote for fish poison. Over the last four years or so, I have been using 2 rods he built for me, and they are great.

nothing wrong with ugly stik, as I own a couple. But Kevin puts together a nice product at a fair price. To compare it to an Ugly Stik would be an apples to oranges comparison.
