Capt. Ron, you are blessed to have such a good crew. The boats that do the right thing, fish hard, and go the extra distance don't have to stoop to selling fish or other ways to fill in the pay gap. I bet that those same deck hands though talented don't work hard to start with. Tips like respect are earned not expected. I have known many talented crew members who got jaded and just did the minimum instead if grinding it out. They got comfortable and lost incentive.
All the best Captains and Crews that I have known LOVE TO FISH !

its economics, plain and simple.some folks just can't afford to give any money away.its has nothing to do with "they no better" and everything to do with"we need every penny".a person wants to go fishing,he has to pay the fair,he has to buy food, pay for gas but whats the one thing he does not have to do????i think it stinks!!!!,i for one believe in taking care of the crew and always tip before we untie.its sad that things are no so expensive but these are the times we live in.

I understand completely what you are saying. I think every fisherperson has to include the 20% tip minimum to the fare plus lunch , gas etc and I think most do but if not dont get on the boat. We now tip 30% minimum on charters but thats us and we get everything you could ask for.

That’s a slippery slope Dave. Alotta guys struggling in this economy. Many can fish but struggle with the extras as far as tipping. Personally I’d rather see a guy head out and pay the fare , tip less if he can’t afford it, than not go out at all. At least it’s a paid fare on the deck.

I think the slippery slope is thinking 20% tip is optional. If you can't afford to tip 20%, you can't afford to go on the trip, period.

Yes a very difficult business, a lot easier ways to make a dollar for sure and a lot of things we don't see are the most difficult part of running these businesses. Repairs, maintenance, staffing not to mention all the drama on the docks

Not sure why these guys do what they do but I'm glad they do.
