Visibility isn't really an issue in the Passaic. You'll only get decent visibility in colder months.

Like Jigman said, don't wade in the Passaic. Take it from me. You can easily get stuck in the mud, there are drop offs, and there is also discarded metal/trash that could potentially cause injury. A small kayak is a great way to explore and not have to deal with thick brush, thorns, poison ivy and ticks. But most of the river is small enough to fish from shore, if you can find access.
