Way to keep working to make it happen. Congrats to your buddy on his fish...you can never guess what's gonna work or not that's for sure. Point is you tried different things and that's what always works best.

If you strictly are targeting flatheads stick with only live bait this time of year, early and late in the season cut bait can work but is not very consistent. They are in the area so keep trying, this time of year I would fish near faster water or the edges of weed flats both shallow 2-4ft of water just to give you some advice where to help with your chances crossing paths with the flatheads
