Anywhere from 8-10 miles depending what area you're looking to fish. You may also consider getting your NY registration and trying along some beaches N of where you're looking.

If you have a smart phone or tablet download the navionics boating app free. In addition to free detailed charts there's all sorts of useful tools including one where you can measure the distance between 2 points.
if you are into boating and fishing you are going to love this app. It works especially well on an iPad.
