If you really want to catch cod, you might want to head North to fish out of Pt Judith where the boats can target them exclusively. There is good cod off of NJ too but not like up North. The Montauk boats fish the same water but its a longer run and you get more water time on the Pt Judith boats.
They quite a sight when first out of the water - as pretty and colorful as a brown trout.
