I'm sure the can be kept alive in a fish tank in a cool garage or bsmt.
I catch huge killies in may by a creek near my house and set up a 20 gallon tank and they last all summer. As long as the watet is cool and properly air rated I don't see a problem. |

I guess it all depends upon the profit to be made. Doubt it very much the person is going to sell herring to break even. Plus would have to open early and close later.

For u fisherman in the West Milford, Newfoundland and Oak Ridge area there is a fairly new bait shop on Rte 23 In New Foundland 2727 rte 23 Ph# 973 545 2336..Opens 5 am Sat & Sun..6 am weekdays.. They are on East bound side..I Fished catskill reservoirs for over 40 years b4 Herring was avaiable up there at Pepacton, Cannonsville, Roundout,& Asokan reservoirs, we trucked bait up there and did just what u fellow are doing good Ice chest bore a hole through lid run the airator hose thru the hole..Secret is keep water cool and good oxegyn flow can keep alive a long time..Also don't try to carry to many when u fish that way..Also hang on to the dead and dying in seperat container all else fails dead bait works..You'll learn the tricks when u have too. Can't beat herring for trout bait..But shiners do work..Specially in spring early cool conditions..Good luck BTW..Early in the year we used to get our bait the night b4 keep them cool and airated..Most survived the next day... tite lines guys....Slider

I live near Fins and Furs bait shop on rt23 (mentioned in the last post). It's a small shop and is still trying to get stocked up with a good selection but the owner is cool and it should be a great place, especially for those who fish the Newark Watersheds in the future.
If you go back to the original topic and see all the discussion it really does show what a huge gap is left now that Lebanon Bait is no longer around. I grew up in that area and have gone there forever, they were great - sorry to see them gone. Hopefully someone opens a shop in that vicinity. |
