Help Round valley night rainbow

Been trying out round valley night fishing for rainbow trout we mark fish and are fishing in 45 foot of water using night crawlers for bait with sinkers about 1 foot above hook with a number 8 hook ? Noticed that alot of people are using geen or white light in the water to attract fish.. is there an advantage to using one?... should we be using Hi rigs so the bait is off the bottom ? could someone please set us in the right direction ....................
