Sounds like you guys haven't jigged for lakers all that much in the past if I am reading correctly.. Not sure if others have told you ,but those hook ups and then quick drops are part of the deal when jigging lakers.. lakers have very hard mouths, you are fishing in deep water, and they can be tough to keep pinned.. When jigging for lakers, a stiff rod with some backbone helps a lot, and if you use braid with a short mono topshot maybe 10-15 feet, you will keep more fish hooked, but even then , lakers spit hooks out a LOT.. Tough to sink a barb, and the deeper the water, the tougher it is,,, Make sure those hooks are needle sharp as well... Up here in the finger Lakes we often have to jig in 125-150 feet or deeper.. Some days I will only boat one or two out of maybe 10 hooked. Treble hook lures help a lot with hookup rate, but are a lot harder on the fish, and you might kill more than you want to.. Any lures with trebles I fish deep for lakers, I snip one hook off the treble . They hook up way better than a single, yet still unpin quite easily..bob

Nice job Lou and Trevor..I couldn't keep up with you guys out there with my trolling motor. Not easy trying to Jigg and control the motor without the remote . I stayed out a few hours more after you guys headed in Lou. I didn't want to push my luck so I got the hell out of there as the wind was howling. First time trying for Lakers and have a ton to learn. I definitely lost one halfway up and a second one felt like bottom but maybe it was a trout? Round two Sunday ..

kind of strange I don't notice the popping off trolling for them with flies...more line is out but not as deep usually when trolling if that has anything to do with it. I refuse to accept loosing that many fish as the norm, there has to be a way around it. some sort of rod type, hook size, lift and reel vs traditional hook set, some superior combination must exist.

Might be the constant pressure especially on the strike while trolling where most of our bites came on the fall last weekend. Tough to get a solid hook up when the lure is falling. I think that's where I managed to land a few as my rod was lighter and could feel even the subtle hit's on the fall where trevordog was using a heavier rod. Who knows but I wanna work at it and see if I can figure it out a little better.

Yeah saw you struggling, tough conditions, even anchoring you would be swinging with the changing winds. The spot lock on the trollers are really nice, seemed to keep us within a few feet of where we wanted to be.
