Exclamation Atlantic Sturgeon Added to NJ's Endangered Species List

New Jersey’s list of endangered and threatened species increases to 84 this week with the addition of the Atlantic sturgeon. It is the second fish, along with the shortnose sturgeon, on that list.
After a lengthy review process, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) listed the Atlantic sturgeon as Endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act. Species which occur in New Jersey and are listed as Endangered on the federal level, automatically become listed as Endangered at the state level as well.

Just read a segment from an old time book about an 8ft sturgeon that ran up the Passaic River to Paterson in the 1800's. Sad that such a cool fish is being wiped out..

Talking Re: Atlantic Sturgeon Added to NJ's Endangered Species List

I tried fishing for them once down south jersey on the BIG D, where the Schuykill dumps in. Me n my homies were using 10-14 inch suckers for bait. We stayed down there for 10 hours without a touch then all of a sudden my buddy Pete gets slammed. Drags rippin like I've never seen it rip before! So he goes to set the hook and gets it only problem is whatever is down in the depths isn't budging. Long story short as soon as the fish started to pull, 40 minutes later, my buddy pulled back. Then ,BOOM, rod SNAPPED!!! First and only time Ive ever seen an UGLY STICK snap like a TWIG!!! TIGHT LINES!!!

Question Re: Atlantic Sturgeon Added to NJ's Endangered Species List

Just curious, when the State & Feds declare a fish endangered can't they stop all fishing in any areas that are considered prime habitat for the species? So as to avoid any chance of accidentally catching them?

I've heard the same. This could be big problems.

Shortnose sturgeon inhabits many of the same waters as the Atlantic Sturgeon, and those weren't shut down. I don't think this will change anything.
