Default Opening eyes on Hooks

Opening the eye of a hook can be a painful task.
Here is the way I do it, Using a vice and a nail set.
Place the nail set in the vice, so that approximatly 3/16"
is sticking in. This will give the gap needed to open the
eye when you tap the nail set, to handle most swivels
see ( pics below )

For those who do not have a vice. Get a piece of 2x4 drill a
3/16" whole in it. Try lining the point of the hook up to the
edge of the board.Close the eye with a vice grips.

Thanks for looking Richie

Have you performed thiis successfully with a forged Gami? I see in the example that you are using SS.

ok i have done this one with great success a vise is a very handy tool to have with this one or a good pair of vice grips and a friend with steady hands cause youll need to be holding the other one after a few times itll get real easy.
Heat is the missing element in all of what I have just read posted and if you use a simple propane or mapp gas torch and heat the eye up cherry red it is very easy to manipulate with a pair of vise grips while the hook is locked in the vice just keep the temp up when you are working get the snap, or whatever ring, or such- reheat fast ,and close- dont dip in water to cool!

Hey guys, the way i have been opening eyes is, I take a pair of cutting pliers and put the cutting edge in the end of the eye between the shank and eye and just give a squeeze it opens right up, of course it helps if the cutters have a pretty good taper so it opens wide enough but works good for me. Just an extra idea for eveyone, dont need a vise and can do on the boat. Hope this helps someone.
Tight lines.
