Mondays and Wednesdays are garbage days!

WHY take a chance? If you're not comfortable (and you're not or you wouldn't be asking), toss it.

It's not like you're not going to catch anymore...........first timers catching fish the size my Father DREAMED about.

Jersey John IS right though.........store bought fish tends to be 5-10 days old when used. If a commercial boat is out at sea for 5 days then the fish they caught on the first day is already 5 days by the time they get to the dock. And it's not like they're constantly re-icing it??? I think store bought tends to seem fresher because the melting ice whisks away slime and odor.

smelling like the ocean is fine, smelling like, uh, crabs or worse is not.

if it never saw ambient temps then think for a minute.

how long is that "fresh" fish in a grocery been sitting at fridge temps between catch and sell? (edit: I see a couple of others mentioned
this already....oops)

DON'T THROW IT AWAY.

if it smells "real real fishy" then it's probably already turned, if you just "smell" it compared to the fresh, non smell, it's ok.

I'm sure many many others have posted this before (and probably wouldn't have helped in this case but...) -> vacuum seal your fish.

I really don't care about the extra cost, it's worth it to me in the amount of fish I haven't let get freezer burnt in a zip lock in my freezer. Found 2 packs of tog from last fall that taste about as fresh as the day I packed them. They were buried and in working through the freezer this spring voila!

ah well, as to the striper, give a small piece a quick saute'... see if it cooks up and flakes nicely, and taste it... you won't die.

well probably won't die

Once read the definition of fresh fish, found in supermarket or at a fish mongers is 3-4 days old, time it takes to process, sell to wholesaler, sell to retailer.

So it could be OK, smell will tell you. If you are ever buying fish, never feel funny asking if you can smell it before you buy.

If you are going to use fish after its been filleted on a boat make sure you wash it off when you get home. Those knives and cutting boards are not exactly the cleanest.

Striper keep ca 3-4 weeks frozen. We bot a food saver that vacuum seals and is supposed to extend that to 3 months. Have a freezer loaded with striper fillets, gonna put that to the test.

Take the fish and soak in ice cold saltwater using either sea salt or kosher salt. in a large container. Bowl or whatever you had. in addition to the salt at one tablespoon of vinegar to the water. Let it sit for about 30 mins add ice to keep it really cold. then completely dry the fillets and smell them if that did not remove the smell then trash it.

Hence why I am such an advocate to cleaning my fish and immediately rinsing in saltwater. Absolute must. All I do is go home dry and vacuum seal.

Don't throw it away, if its no good, freeze it and use it for crab bait, just make sure you mark it as crab bait (don't ask me why I know this)
