How do you keep them on a hook? Do you tie them in a small sack like you would for steelhead? Heading to LH next week and wanted to give something new a try. Thanks for your help.

Depends on how you're fishing them. If from a boat you're just dropping them straight down into a school of fish so no need to overthink it. If casting from shore, find the tougher sinew and try to get the hook thru it a few times and lob your casts out carefully. Shorter leader helps so the bait doesn't whip off when you cast. You can toy with dental floss too but it's a time suck.

I use elastic thread to wrap it to the hook. Sold at most bait shops. But many guys use the panty hose packets. Another thought is the finger sized gauze wrap, which is easier to tie off the ends for the pouch.

I do one of two things, one I'm not going to mention because the peanut gallery will jump down my throat.
![]() The other thing....is if you're using them for hybrids...the amount of actual chicken liver you need on a hook to catch them is miniscule. Just go with a #6 hook, and use a piece of chicken liver no bigger than a dime or nickel. Not only will the small piece not fly off the hook, but you'll get better hook-up rates too. The first time I tried them we only brought one container, and by the end of the night we were scraping every last thing in the juice and no joke catching fish on pieces no bigger than a booger. |

i've seen a few times that bigger pieces catch bigger fish. some days it might not matter. like jigman said if you're fishing from a boat just drop it down, some days you won't even need a weight. another thing is you can stuff the liver into pantyhose.
circle hooks if you're not going to be holding the rod in hand or plan on releasing the fish. they will swallow on impact sometimes.
