ice fishing 101?

What do I need to buy to get started..any advice would be appriciated...I know it's broad but need a start. Thanks in advance...

I was a freshly birthed fawn last ice season... Shaky limbs and all! Lol... GetANet showed me the ropes and I had a blast! My basics were handed-down cross style wooden tip ups from dale, a few new spools of ice line, barrel swivels, hooks to match your baits, and suitable fluoro leader material for whatever u plan to target. Our first trip out, we didn't even have an auger... We used his beast of a spud bar and welding gloves to blow holes in 8" of ice. We prob opened close to 15 holes that day. A skimmer to clean the holes is helpful and cheap. Some sort of ice cleats or creepers are a good piece of safety equipment to have (if u have corkers they'll work just fine). Ice picks around your neck...also a must. There's a ton of stuff for ice fishing but the above mentioned stuff will def get u started. A hand auger is good to have, too. Chopping with the spud was a bit brutal the next day lol... Many others will chime in with other stuff, but this is pretty much what got me started. Always think safety first, too!

Ya need a ATV with chains, a large screen fish camera and a giant extremely expensive fishfinder, a battery charged ion ice auger, a huge six man shanty, a G Loomis ice rod and matching extremely expensive in line reel, five platinum coated gun stock tip ups that hook land and reel in your fish and a brief case full of jigs you'll never use! That will set you back a mere few thousand, pocket change for most of us!!!! LMAO!!!!

Ice cleats are the most important piece of gear in my opinion. Followed up by jigging rod,a few tip ups, sled or bucket for carrying gear and then an auger. I go in that order because without cleats you're not getting far. You don't need 5 tipups to start. Jigging rod to keep you entertained and lastly, if you're with a group of guys someone will probably have an auger. That's my 2 cents for what it's worth. Warm clothing seems obvious.

BEER, WHISKEY, FLASK!!!! A couple tip ups, 1 jigging rod, assorted jigs. I'd start with medium or small shiners. They see more action then the xl, jumbo shiners. Start small and see if you like it. Lots of fun and fish to catch through the ice. It helps when you have great group of anglers to ice fish with. Come out with me and the gang this year, we'll get you started and give you a tip or 2. Bare minimum? A little hatchet and a string with a bug hooked on it....that's it... Before you say anything, I've seen it! Hahaha

The best ice fishing investment I have made is a vexilar. It's so fun to watch the fish on the flasher and you can immediately tell if you have life in the area when you drill a new hole.

I prefer jigging to tip ups because i like to move around a lot. For jiggin I recommend small tear drop jigs tipped with waxies and rapala jiggin raps in perch color.
