I have 5 daiwa sea line sg's and they're about 10yrs. With no line counter probs. I love those reels. I've just started using in-line planers myself, so I went went with a set of Cabelas planer board rods. I believe they are MH 8`6 and inexpensive. I use 15 lb with a barrel swivel to 10lb fluro and right before the swivel I put a plastic bead to catch the board if the line releases. This will keep the board from going into your fish. I fish for hybrid and pure strain stripers and run live bait 90% of the time so on my planers I use live bait with no weight, but I let out only enough line to let the bait swim down to my desired depth. Then I attach the board....its not perfect but it worked. I also run 2 downriggers so that is where I'm getting better depth control. I probably left some things out so if you have questions just ask.

The ones in my boat are diawa sealines too, they work perfectly never had probs w them. I use uglystiks, theyre cheap and r great rods for dipsys, planers, downriggers. 8' med-lite r my downriggers and 7'6" med r my planers. Remember after u get a flag u still wanna fight the fish w a light setup or u just crank em in w no fun, light is better......
I have 6 size 17s and 2 size 27s. I got a jumbo reel of trilene for free from gander so I run that on all, 12lb XT, barrel swivel to 10-12lb floro leaders. I dont use beads I run mine w tattle flags, dont need them.
