Sharking in the surf warning from NJ Fish and Game

Add this to the never ending saltwater regulations........

Please be aware that fishing for sharks is regulated by the State and federal regulations. Federal regulations prohibit targeting any prohibited species and anglers must release any prohibited shark immediately, without removing it from the water and in a manner that maximizes its chances of survival. For example, Sand Tiger Sharks are a prohibited species, therefore posing for pictures on the beach with this species or any other species on the prohibited list is a violation of federal regulations. But millions being finned a year and tortured by being discarded alive with only one possible fate is perfectly acceptable. Have to love the double standards we have to life with in life every day.

Targeting stuff like Dusky Sharks, Brown Sandbar Sharks and Sand Tiger Sharks is prohibited and these should be released immediately without being taken out of the water.
These fish may be encountered while fishing the beach for other species (even other sharks.)
In order to tag sharks, you need a special permit from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.

Dumb ass question but......if push came to shove (yeah in a litigious sense) how can the CO prove what you were targeting? I understand the pic fine thing as an easy ticket but targeting? Can’t see it holding up but what do I know?

These are state and federal rules. Nj and the united sttes can only apply these rules to waters in their jurisdiction. I feel exactly the way you do abput shark finning millions of fish killed for a bowl of soup to improve your libido. I would love to see international rules or other countries forbidding this ungodly waste. Atrocities like this could eventually upset the balance of nature if it isn't happening already.
