Default Manasquan Inlet 6/27. Lots of action and some cool sights!

Hit the inlet for the last 3 hours of the incoming tide. Used spearing on a single naked hook fluke rig. Got 15 short fluke, and I do mean SHORT!! Most were probly 12 inches or less. I measured my biggest one just to see how long it was and it was 16 inches. The cool sights I saw were a giant school of spearing coming through the inlet with bonita chasing them and breaking water. I had one jump out about 3 feet away from me and got a real good look at it and they were definitely bonita. Looked like little torpedos speeding by. Tried taking my weight off and tossing a spearing out in free spool, but no takers. Also saw a sea turtle swim down the inlet which was a first for me. All in all a beautiful day to be fishing and plenty of action as I also missed probly as many bited as I caught. Lots of other guys caught too but all were similar peewee size fish.

It’s funny. After getting off the boat, I drove over to the inlet. I parked in the lot and observed a guy pulling in tiny fluke, one after another. It was probably you!
In any case, what you witnessed was really cool. The bonito are in early this year.

Always good news when the inlet is full of life.

Love the Manasquan Inlet, its quickly becoming one of my favorite places to fish the salt. Crazy to see all those sights too! Early this year for sure.

When those Bonito move in close you need to move fast. Most of us are never that lucky and they always seem to come close when the angler least expects it, and is unprepared, but if you had a fresh water sized spinning rod with about 8-10 pound test and a few small white bucktails or perhaps an AVA 007[ smaller is better] rigged and ready, you might have nailed a few. They have great eye sight and seldom hit a rig with a lot of "stuff" on it... another good choice is a light spinner, and a SMALL hook totally hidden in a whole Spearing.. Only problem with the single Spearing from shore is you might not be able to get it to the fish.. Works great from a boat though.. Sometimes better than anything else.
Never tried it, but a big live Killie tossed out with no weight and a small hook might work as well.... bob

I fish the inlet often (from the Pt. Pleasant side along the wall) and have for the past several years. The last few weeks it does seem that the bottom is paved with 8-12” fluke. What I have noticed, is that there are certain spots that tend to hold bigger shorts (15-17.5”s) and a good amount of keepers. My best from the wall last year was #5.5.

I was the tall guy wearing an orange flyers hat if that helps identify me lol. There was a guy killing the shorts with killies as well that was right in front of the parking lot maybe 30 yards to my left.
