My passion is tuna jigging. I have learned a lot from the numerous, fantastic stores that specialize in jigging....jignpop & salty water tackle. I have found that the shimano flatside jig and fcllabo sl jigs have produced best. My question to all of you is how do you attach the hooks to your jig???? Some prefer at the top of the jig & some prefer at bottom of the jig....the shimano jigs are designed to attach at the top. I am curious as to your opinions and or advice you have????!!!!! The three best colors undoubtedly are silver, pinks, & blues....

i attached the hook at the bottom. This prevents the hook wrapping around the leader when the jig is fluttering.

I like yellow and pot roast color too.

Never did much high speed jigging in the northeast canyons. Wasn't productive for me. Down in the Caribbean it's a different story...rippin benthos jigs the entire water column for various species.

Most of what I do in the northeast is pretty basic. Lift and drop, nothing fancy or exhaustive. I always have two assist hooks attached to a solid ring and tie leader to my splits

I use a lot of long knife jigs,for a fast drop on the partyboats. They keep you in the zone longer and away from everyone else. With them one hook on top one on the bottom.

One hook at the top which is attached to a solid ring. which is attached to the jig with a split ring.
less break offs having both the assist hook and the line tied to the solid ring.

I also like the shimano flat sided jigs, BUT found the Origional PBJ Stingo jigs to out produce them by a big margin.

I also really like the Run Off lure sand eels. in 8 and 12 Oz.

I remove the hooks on all three of the jigs I listed and only use a top assist hook

I like gold hammered jigs 10-12 oz. big hook on bottom and 2 assist on top.
With a yo yo jig. Up and down. Crank a few 10 more times drop down 10 more etc. put lots of fish in that way.

With diamond jigs I like using a 4x treble. If a fish gets all 3 hooks in its mouth it pretty much inhibits its ability to swim with an open mouth. This slows the fish down dramatically as it cannot get sustainable levels of oxygenated water over its gills to draw out a long winded fight.

Thanks for the responses. I have every jig in the world.....hots drift tunes, Lamble, fcllabo, 7 sevens sea, stingo pbj, etc.....my best producer has been a shimano flatside in 224 gram in blue sardine color. Best day was 27 yft in the spencer 5 yrs ago. The shimano jigs I always attach to top, as they recommend. However, Kilsong from jignpop recommends hooks off the bottom of the jig and I have had great success with the FCllabo Sl in 230 grams in the silver wave glow jigs. Sami from Salty water has a method that is neat and unique. He attaches a single hook with an owner swivel to a split ring to jig....instead of the hook being attached to jig, it's attached to split ring. This method allows jig to be changed and no need to retie. Many places have recommended the hots drift tune jigs. They look great, nice colors too. Hook size is also very important with the Hots jigs...too big gets hung up on jig body. However, I have had little success with them. I fish primarily in Cape Cod and NJ. Anyone put 1 hook up and 1 down? Think it would effect the performance??? Also, I have tried all the fancy rods and the best for me has been shimano trevala tvc-60h. The best and best deal on a jig/pop rod is the van staal vjs70-325....an absolute dream of a rod and handles tuna from 40-300 lb without a problem. Let's hear all of your opinions on this matter....my tuna season starts soon!!! I can't wait to go to Cape Cod!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's pretty interesting theory there and makes a ton of sense. Never thought of that.

On speed jigs I put a double on the top of the jig or a longer single hook on the top. In the Northeast canyons, I find that hammered diamond jigs work best with a single hook on the bottom. Might have to try the treble hook next time!
