Default Fish ID

Was casting small plugs when this guy hit my Rapala in one of NNJ's tidal rivers. My first guess was Alewife Herring, but it was larger than any Alewife I've seen, probably 7"-8". Any guesses?

Great river bait. River Herring. Caught them up to 10 inches down in Trenton back in the day.

Looks like a giant Blue back Herring after further investigation.

Herring are a very underrated gamefish. They are among most powerful fighters grain for grain.

You wouldn't believe the fight this one put up.

Interesting... I think Mark Boriek was involved somewhat with saving river herring from a different perspective (not sure, but he probably knows Paul E. I would think)... think they had stocked Shadow Lake in Red Bank with small herring and there was a fish ladder proposal as well for there as historically the herring ran the Navesink, I guess when the populations were high enough for "overflow" runs from the main rivers.
