Looking for another reel to add to the fluke arsenal as a Christmas gift. Any opinions about this reel would be appreciated. Pm if you would like to.

Can you include me in this request please! Looked at Canyon reels last night and need insight. I am looking for a better togging reel than the brand x I am having troubles with - clickers and bearings! Thanks Gerry Z. for your thread on clickers. I blew up a reel toggin yesterday...sounds like a coffee grinder. I am now told brand x is notorious for bearing problems. Partially my fault, not knowing you should not exceed max drag setting on these reels. Fishing braid, I fish with almost a locked up drag (set by feel) so that tog cant go back home to his snag. I know star drag reels may be a better choice, but I am using lever drag reels. Any advice would be appreciated in fixing brand x or would love to speak to a Canyon Reel guy about drag and bearings. Also I am left handed. I do a lot of casting around to catch my tog and have chosen reels that have a casting control for that reason. Thanks! Fishfish

First off, I do not own a Canyon reel. My brother has one and the only thing I see wrong with it is the distance the drag lever has to travel, much farther than an Avet. I can't put it in free spool without changing hands.

Fixing an Avet requires replacing the pinion bearing right under the drag knob. It is the only bearing that is difficult to get out. Maybe there is a special tool to get it out, but I could not find anything. Being an engineer I made my own, pops it out easily.

I used to set the drag by feel until I damaged a few bearing. Now I use a scale. I think I found an alternative to using a scale on the Avet SX. Tighten the drag until it just stops free spooling in the Bait position, just a little bit of tension. That puts it at 7 to 8 ponds in Strike and 11 in Full.

Thanks for the responses and info! Still searching for "the" ,my perfect togging reel. With the more quality reels, what is with these junk bearings? "Obsolescence" engineering? I talked to a fellow togger on a boat yesterday and he was telling me about ceramic bearings. Also, the HS 15 Canyon reel is a 6:1 retrieve which I don't like when bottom fishing. Prefer a 5:1 for easier cranking. I think Canyon reels were designed more for high speed jigging. Now looking at Ambassadeurs. Thanks again! Fishfish

Same here. Can't get my Canyon into free spool with out having to lift my hand off the reel.

Sorry guys. I check the site and get the error message all of the time, so I have not been on here much.

The HS 15 is a great little reel and I see what the guys are saying about the free spool and the drag. It does go down a bit, before you hit the free spool.

An option is the HS 16, if your not worried about spending a few extra dollars. Its a much different reel, night & day. Dual drag, different set up completely.

If you would like to try the reels, I am always lending my stuff out to people who have their doubts about the reels.
I use the HS-16 for just about everything now, from fluke to inshore tuna. Plenty of drag, line capacity, and is even available in a 2 speed model too, although I dont see the need for the 2 speed in that size reel. Not here in Nj at least.

The original HS-15's had a few issues with drags backing off, but once the camber is replaced they are fine.

What kind of questions do you have?? Again.... sorry for the delay. Not sure if its my computers or not.... but just yesterday had an error message on a server come up when I tried to get on here. ( 3 different times yesterday) Is there a secret now? Something I should know?
