A Preference for Jigging
Maybe live herring for walleye & hybrids on the drops is getting old for me, but we did catch some fish, none of them very big. (Trying to add photos of a couple of them with this post.) All we caught jigging Binskys was a rock bass for me, but I think I better enjoyed the attempt, although the bite that had lasted an hour or so when setting bait lines was interesting. Looked forward to doing more jigging tomorrow, but have had to cancel. Maybe next fall all we'll do is jig.

Re: A Preference for Jigging
jigging is real fun something cool about a lure 20+ feet straight down below you suddenly getting hit and cranking it all the way back up.

Re: A Preference for Jigging
everyone that jigs has their own take.there are so many jigs to try like blades ,swims, spoons, rattles, darters and my favorite the jigging rapala.its really all about what the fish want, were they are and what you are most confident with.
the best advise is to keep going till you can put a pattern together that is good for you and catches fish. |

Re: A Preference for Jigging
It's even better when you're in 1500' of water offshore and your jig suddenly stops less than 150' down, followed by the sudden dumping of your reel by a fat yellowfin tuna... OOOOooooooooo weeeeeeeeeee!

Re: A Preference for Jigging
We did that in Florida just beyond the reef. Found king mackerel in 85 feet of water, jigging at medium retrieve up the column. My biggest--about 18 pounds--hit about a third of the way up. Terrific run!

Re: A Preference for Jigging
Bruce i have been using rippin raps and jigging raps near structure and have only been catching perch. It is difficult to keep my canoe steady over the structure that i want to fish, if the canoe moves too much the line scopes out away from the canoe and i have a hard time seeing it on my sonar. those blade baits are heaver as well as the larger jiggin raps but you have to be careful not to get hung up that can get expensive.
