NOAA Fisheries workshop set for Sept. 23-24

The Marine Recreational Information Program, its new Effort Survey and data calibration effort model will be peer and public reviewed on Sept. 23 and 24. This model will be used to calibrate recreational effort data and have a direct impact on recreational fishing harvest limits in 2026.

NOAA Fisheries Office of Science and Technology will host the two-day virtual workshop with the opportunity for partner and public comment on the proposed Fishing Effort Survey calibration model methodology.

The model is proposed for use to update the historical recreational fishing estimates produced using the FES to the scale of the improved FES anticipated for implementation in January 2026.

The workshop is to be held online from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 23 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 24; times are estimates. You must register in advance to participate. For additional information visit FederalRegister.gov.

Agreed Larry, something to keep a close eye on. It hopefully is a start in a long list of things that needs to be addressed in fisheries management and more specifically as it relates to MRIP the allocation of quotas and quantification of recreational catches which have not only been a huge bone of contention with the recreational community but publicly acknowledged as being grossly overstated by the agency responsible for adopting it. Remember back in I believe it was in or around 2018 when the entire industry for fluke received a 40% increase in quota but the recreational sector essentially received zero as our historical catches were retroactively increased by an equal amount due to New MRIP which all but mitigated any increase to our sector while the commercial sector walked away with an absolute 40% increase in quota that year. Something as Larry said, everyone should have a vested interest keeping a close eye on how this pans out. It's a huge issue which could benefit the recreational angler if addressed properly, hopefully third times a charm.

What you said and the lack of a well funded group to protect and push for a recreational agenda is what is leaving us without influence.

When will the rod and reel manufacturers step up? Who do they think will be around to purchase their products in two generations?
