..when you can catch the blind ones !!!! Put a nice catch of seven keepers to 4 lbs in the back bay yesterday morning. My buddy Scott caught this fluke that had NO EYES and this is no BS. It hit a jig tipped with fresh bunker strip and was 22 inches. In all my years of fishing I have never seen this where both eyes are missing. In the one pic you can see where I scratched the pigmentation that had grown over both eye sockets...... So something to be said about a fishes sense of smell.

Smell??. Probably helped, but that fish had no problems because of its lateral line... Fish feed in almost total darkness at times, and the lateral line functions as eyes,ears, nose, and "hands"...
In the winter out on the edge of the shelf, fluke are in 400-500 FOW and deeper, and they eat just fine in very low light conditions for probably 6 months out of every year, so yeah a sightless fluke should do just fine.. Still a pretty rare catch!.... bob |
