Default Penn Squall SQL Conventional Reels

Anyone try the Penn Squall Star Drag Conventional Reels? they look like a possible "cheap" mans Tog / Bottom reel.

I had a Squall 12, it's a nice lightweight little reel. I'm not a fan of the graphite construction and prefer lever drag so I switched to an Avet SX. If you prefer star drag it is a solid reel, the magnetic cast control is a nice feature too.

Its not a bad reel at all for the $$

As mentioned, I prefer a Lever Drag myself. But the Squall will do the job....

Hi Dave, the Penn Squall star drag is a good choice as are the Daiwa Saltist series, and the Shimano Tekota 600 and Torium 14. Like you, I prefer a star drag reel for blackfishing.

Double dog mod on the toriums makes them a great little reel that is hard to beat. (google it, lol)
And should also mention for something similar to the Penn, the Daiwa Sealine-X reels are worth a look.

I've got a Penn Squall lever drag in my arsenal, not a complaint yet. My Avet SX 5.3 MC needed the bearings replaced at the end of the first season.

The squall and fathoms for a little extra are both very nice reels. Highly recommend either one.
